The four English representatives in the group stages of last season’s Champions League shared out more than €145 million in participation, match and performance bonuses and their share of the market pool.

The Manchester United may have lost in the quarter finals but Sir Alex Ferguson’s side still earned €45.8 million from the tournament – second only to winners Inter Milan.

The reason that the Old Trafford side pocketed more than runners-up Bayern Munich is the money from the market pool, which represents the marketability of the sides taking part. Maccabi Haifi of Israel earned the least of the 32 sides that took part in the group stages of the 2009/10 Champions League. That figure of €8.5 million remains a substantial figure in Israeli footballing terms but was so low because Maccaibi Haifi were the only side not to at least get a point in the group stages – so therefore not earning any performance bonuses – while the Israeli team’s share of the market pool was just €1.4 million, which was the smallest sum paid out to any team from the market pool.

Apoel earned €1.7 million from the market pool that, along with performance and match bonuses, saw the Cypriot side exit the group stages with €10 million. Four times winners Liverpool left the competition at the same stage but had €19.6 million from the market pool – marginally more than winners Inter Milan – that saw the Merseyside team drop into the Europa League with €28.9 million. Liverpool then earned another €3 million. In total, UEFA distributed €746.4 million between the 32 clubs in the Champions League and another €135 million to the clubs taking part in the Europa League. The financial benefits of playing in the second tier are far lower but winners Athletic Madrid still pocketed another €6.4 million on top of €15.1 million earned from the group stages of the Champions League, where the La Liga side were eliminated in the first round – thus dropping into the Europa League. English side Fulham earned €10 million for qualifying for their first European final – just €1.5 million more than Maccaibi Haifa got for losing six Champions League group games. For English clubs, the Premier League may be a cash cow but between 1992/93 and 2008/09, Manchester United earned €261 million from the Champions League - and that’s just from UEFA. Research from tournament sponsor Mastercard shortly before the 2009/10 final claimed that whoever won out of Bayern Munich or Inter Milan would earn €120 million in total. In Spain, Germany, Italy and France, the number of clubs taking part since the group stages began is in double figures but Champions League money is skewing domestic competition more than ever.

Every team that fails to reach the group stage is guaranteed €200,000 each as a solidarity payment. In other words, compensation for taking part before most clubs started pre-season friendlies. The first qualifying round of this year’s Champions League took place before the last-16 stage of the World Cup was completed. Although neither Andorran title holders Santa Coloma nor Malta’s Birkirkara were likely to call on any players in South Africa, th  tie was too early for the pitch in the Pyrenean principality. The game could not be played and Birkirkara were given a 3-0 walkover, handing the Maltese side a huge advantage ahead of their home leg, which they won 4-3. Santa Coloma departed with €200,000 for playing one game plus another €130,000 that every club playing in the first round also receives. Birkirkara got the same then netted another €130,000 for every club playing in the second qualifying round, where the Maltese champions lost 3-1 on aggregate to Slovakia’s MŠK Žilina.

No club winning through from the first qualifying round progressed passed the next stage, but with €130,000 'compensation’ also on offer for playing in the third round, a side that got through two rounds of qualifiers then loses in the third round would collect €590,000 from UEFA. Those clubs that get into the fourth phase and a play-off for a place in the group stages then lose do not keep the earlier payments. Instead, there is a one-off fee of €2.1 million and a place in the Europa League, where another system of cash distribution starts up all over again.
